Milestone for achieving lower carbon food production

Bemestingsplan 2024 fosfaat kali adviezen | lower carbon food productionIn the journey to decarbonise food production, a major milestone has been achieved during 2023 in Europe – thanks to the use of Lower Carbon nitrogen fertiliser Nutramon.

This blog explains the aims of the 2 projects and their importance amid rising global demand for lower carbon food products.

Reducing carbon emissions in food production

OCI Nitrogen has been driving an initiative to deliver lower carbon value chains for food products, in close collaboration with a German and an English agricultural trading partners in Europe.

The focus has been made on reducing carbon emissions, with the aim of moving towards offering consumers lower carbon footprint food.

There is growing global demand for lower carbon food products, driven by increasing environmental awareness among consumers, supportive governmental policies, and industry shifts towards more sustainable practices.

Therefore, growing and harvesting 2023 crops with Lower Carbon Nutramon fertiliser was the first step in the process of reducing the carbon footprint of crop productions like wheat and distilling barley.

Calculating the Product Carbon Footprint for wheat and distilling barley

These supply chain projects will provide essential data for calculating the carbon footprint of wheat and distilling barley throughout their production lifecycle.

By incorporating data from the cultivation, fertiliser application and harvesting phases, the projects will enable the calculation of complete carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for lower carbon wheat flour and distilling barley to become one step closer.

Calculating a product carbon footprint is a critical metric used to understand and quantify the environmental impact of products, and is increasingly used to inform businesses and consumers aiming to make more environmentally responsible choices.

The future of lower carbon wheat and distilling barley harvests

OCI Nitrogen and it’s partners are expanding the projects for 2024, inviting more farmers to participate in achieving a lower carbon crop production harvest.

These new value chains need the development of strong partnerships in order to create and establish a lower carbon food chain, that continues to nourish consumers.

OCI Nitrogen efforts focus on reducing the environmental impact of staple foods, with the aim of building an environmentally sustainable future for the food and agriculture industries.
